The American belief that money results in happiness still resonates with many individuals today, despite many examples of the contrary. Although money can provide a sense of security and stability, there are many individuals who have found great success and monetary gain yet are still struggling with various issues. Many people, despite their socioeconomic background or situation, turn to drugs or alcohol as a relief from other greater, deeper, underlying problems. Many individuals who have succeeded in the corporate world with very high-powered, stressful careers turn to drug and alcohol abuse as a way to self-medicate and cope with the pressures of their jobs. However, there are also high rates of abuse and addiction within groups of individuals who inherited their fortunes. There are many difficulties that children from wealthy families face regarding substance abuse, identity, life purpose and addiction.
From an early age, many of these children from wealthy families have problems with identity and feelings of inadequacy due to pressures to live up to their family names. Their unusual social and economic status often leads them to feel different from others, and they often identify themselves primarily with their family money and don’t really develop a strong sense of self. Although these individuals seemingly have anything they could over possibly want, they also often suffer from loneliness and have poor self-esteem. At Passages Malibu, we have a Life Purpose Counseling program to help individuals in this particular situation. We help people discover their innate talents, strengths, and abilities, and help improve self esteem and a strong, positive identity. At Passages, we see people from all walks of life and can help anyone struggling with addiction.
